Project: Hot Spot Analysis of Chemical Contaminants

Goal:

The objective of this analysis is to model contaminant level movement over time in the target area. Ground water samples were taken during the period 1/1/2004 through 9/1/2004 and analyzed for chemical contaminants present. Multiple chemical contaminants were detected in the area. The concentrations were ranked from 0 for all contaminant levels at save concentrations to 2 for all contaminant levels over NR 140 GW Enforcement Standards.

Process:

I took the following main steps to complete this project:

  1. Uploaded cad drawing of area structures and well sampling locations.
  2. Uploaded tables of chemical sampling data and rankings for each date.
  3. Made a new point shapefile and drew a point for each well location from the cad drawing.
  4. For each sampling date the IDW Spatial Analyst tool was utilized to generate a raster based on the uploaded tables with ranked chemicals and well locations.
  5. Utilized ArcScene to create a 3D overview of the area including extruded buildings and wells.
  6. Designed the map layout with appropriate features including progression of chemical flow over the area and the 3D image for reference.

Outcome:

The analysis shows contamination levels within the area are increasing. The plume is growing from the south-east and north-west corners of the lot and flowing towards the north-east section of the lot. Wells numbered 1, 4, 5, and 8 have the highest contaminant levels and should be focused on first for mitigation efforts.
